The Big Idea: Solid Snake is back, and so is Metal Gear! Quite possibly the most anticipated game for the PS2 is out and to put a not too fine a point on it: This game ROCKS!!! For PlayStation infidels, Metal Gear Solid 2 (MGS2) is the sequel to the game that defined the action-stealth genre. You play a former special forces agent code-named Solid Snake and word has reached you that they've built a new Metal Gear. Metal Gears are by definition tanks with special abilities like nuclear launch platforms but this time they've built what seems to be the Metal Gear killer. A giant Metal Gear with amphibious capabilities and immense power has been stolen by terrorists and it's up to you to either get it back or destroy it. With nothing but a pack of cigarettes, a silenced tranquilizer gun and a cardboard box(!), you go in for the cinematic action experience of your life! Graphics: Like watching an action movie. The visuals are so crisp that if you're not careful, you might find yourself gaping in awe at the sky and clouds passing by while terrorists are shooting at you. Fatal mistake, that. The story is told through cut scenes that are more impressive when you realize that they're using in-game graphics for every one of them. Facial expressions register and movements are motion-captured to give them that true-to-life quality. Rain splatters against the screen giving the effect that you're right there with only a plate of glass in front of you separating you from the action. If there's one quality of this game that allows for total immersion, this is it. Sound: Gets your blood running and stays in your head long after you've finished the game and turned off your PS2.Remember how some kinds of music rouse you to action like the "Raider's March" from the Indiana Jones movies or the "Star Wars" theme? I guarantee the music in this game will blow you away. The fact that it's composed by Harry Greg-Williamson of "Enemy of the State" and "The Rock" fame might have something to do with it. The music is subdued when you're sneaking around, but when you're discovered or an action sequence begins, it launches into an orchestral frenzy that'll have your butt cheeks clenching involuntarily (believe me!). Explosions are thunderous and you can even hear a bullet shell clink on the floor when it's discarded. This aspect of the game is beyond fault.
